Based on results from animal studies, locally available nitric oxide may inhibit skin steroidogenesis resulting in reduced levels of androgens like testosterone and 5αdihydrotestosterone (5α-DHT). Androgens in skin are thought to stimulate oil production that drives the development of acne as well as promote hair loss in men. By reducing androgen levels locally in skin, topical nitric oxide may lead to first-in-class local antiandrogen therapies used to treat these disease processes.
